Coming Soon: Rogue Ten Thousand Brew Ale
From the Rogue Nation Wire Service:
On May 18, 1989 John maier brewed the 1st batch of Rogue Ales. On November 14th, he brewed the 10,000th batch at the Rogue Ales Brewery. Rogue began as a brew pub in Ashland, OR in 1988. The first brewery was in the pub’s basement and then relocated to a garage on the Yaquina Bayfront in Newport. And through it all was Rogue Brewmaster John “More Hops” Maier. Over 18 years he has created and brewed 40+ different ales including: American Amber, Brutal Bitter, Chipotle Ale, Chocolate Stout, Dad’s Little Helper, Dead Guy Ale, Half-e-Weizen, HazelNut Brown Nectar, Festivale, Honey Cream Ale, Imperial India Pale Ale, Imperial Stout, Juniper Pale Ale, Kells Irish Lager, Mocha Porter, Morimoto Black Obi Soba Ale, Morimoto Imperial Pilsner, Morimoto Soba Ale, Old Crustacean Barleywine, Oregon Golden Ale, Saint Rogue Red, Santa’s Private Reserve, Shakespeare Stout, Smoke Ale, Uberfest Pilsner, Younger’s Special Bitter, Oyster Cloyster Stout, Mogul Madness, Love & Hoppiness, Monk Madness, Glen, SchwartzBier, Skull Splitter, Integrity IPA, Imperial Porter, Artisan Lager, Charlie, Coho Harvest Ale, Cran-NCherry, Kriek, McRogue Scotch Ale, Rogue-N-Berry, Rose Festival Ale, Squak Valley IPA, Waterfront Lager, and many more.
Born in Riverside, CA in 1955, John was employed by Hughes Aircraft Co. as a Senior Electronic Technician where he worked on the F-14 Tomcat Radar System. In the Fall of 1986, John attended the Siebel Institute of Technology and graduated from their 50th course in Brewing Technology. That same year he brewed a Barleywine that won the American Homebrewer Association’s Homebrewer of the Year Award. He worked as Assistant Brewmaster at the Alaskan Brewery before coming to Rogue.
So what style is the special Brew 10,000? “It’s not any style,”said John, “but it’ll be good.” It’s made with 7 ingredients: Vienna, French Special Aroma, and Maris Otter Pale Ale Malts; Yakima Summit and German Saphir Hops, Free Range Coastal Waters and Top Fermenting Pacman Yeast. No chemicals, preservatives, or additives were added. It has a big earthy malt flavor balanced by lingering hoppiness, with hints of citrus--22 Plato, 78 AA, 60 IBU, 30 Lovibond. The brew will be packaged in 750 ml Black ceramic bottles with swingtop closures. 10,000 serigraphed bottles will be produced and available at select retailers across the country.
When asked if he has considered retirement after 18 years and 10,000 brews John said, “This is what I was born to do. I’m looking forward to 10,000 more.”
With any luck this will arrive tomorrow. I'll update this post with pricing info as it becomes available.

Hey Chris,
I love Rogue brews, but they are really on the expensive side. Any thoughts on why they are so much more pricey than other OR micros?
Thanks!
The Horse Brass Pub and Rogue Brewing having a long and colorful history together. The characters involved are well seasoned Oregon beverage industry movers and shakers. This is in part due to the fact that they have been doing this for so many years. It is clearly a reflection of their passion for what they do. They're crusty yes, but they're honest, they know what real friendship is; they know what it means to be real men. And real men do have big hearts.
So in addition to working on many successful projects in concert, they have done their share of playing and travelling together as well. Work and play are the same things to these guys.
Rogue YSB (Younger's Special Bitter) was created by brewmaster John Maier for the Horse Brass Pub's 20th anniversary. It was so delicious and so well-recieved that they continued production and now it is the most widely distributed beer by the company. It continues to be, of course, the official house beer of the Horse Brass Pub.
YSB was named for the Horse Brass owner, Don Younger's, late brother Bill. The recipe was created during a legendary trip with John Maier to England with Don Younger. It is a perfect Northwest brew, and perfect English-style ale, all in one!
For the Horse Brass' 30th anniversary, John brewed YSB Imperial, now available exclusively through the Horse Brass at $9 per 750ml bottle.
Sorry to burst your bubble "anonymous", but the Imperial YSB is available at Belmont Station and the Rogue Public House in addition to the Brass.
It should also be noted that the Imperial YSB at the Horse Brass is for on-premise consumption only because they don't sell beer "to go." If you want a bottle for take away I believe Belmont Station is your only option.
It was also recently added to Rogue's regular line-up, so it'll be available at other bottle shops in the next few months, but the price will most likely jump to $13 or so to fall in line with the other ceramic-bottled beers in the XS series.
I heard this 10000 brew will cost $20 a bottle is this true?
G/K
Yes, it's around $20/bottle...
I stand corrected!!! Bursting my bubble, indeed. And here I thought the Imperial YSB was available exclusively at the Horse Brass Pub. Now that I know it's widely available I'll make it a point to pick up a bottle. I could not help but notice a fair amount of aggression in your response to my post, which merely stated some information coming from my long personal history with Rogue Brewery. I certainly hope you are not having a bad day.
Sorry if my response seemed short or aggressive, but since some of your information was misleading I felt it necessary to provide clarification for the sake of Rogue fans who may find it more convenient to purchase a bottle of the 30th Anniversary YSB "to go", or from someplace less smoky than the Horse Brass. Don't get me wrong, I love the place and I'm glad I can smoke there, but lots of people refuse to go in there because of air quality concerns and I can't say I blame them.
I had also just received word from a sales rep informing me that the Imperial YSB would become a full-time Rogue beer, and the comment field provided a quick way to get that info out to the world.
Upon re-reading my previous comment it does seem a bit harsh, and I apologize for that, but I feel it's important for the information on this site to be as accurate as possible. Everyone's comments are welcome here, but please understand that when when someone make a statement like "available exclusively at the Brass" it's my job to make sure that statement is correct.
Apology accepted! And what a great job you have, blogging about beer on so many internet venues! i see your posts just about everywhere. many would envy your position!
