Oh. my. g-d. It does appear Mr. Jackson is not aging well. It was *totally* inappropriate to come on visibly intoxicated. How embarrassing. And if he had known that one of the other guests would be Lovitz, you'd think he would have been prepared with better armor.
Anyways, the whole thing made me very sad. (I'm not giving up beer though. But I'm also not likely going on Conan any time soon)
Oh! and have you seen this?
I would do Conan's TV show again: Should I have known better? What do you think?
Me thinks he doesn't get it.
Finally saw this segment and I don't think Jackson was drunk at all.
Conan's a comedic entertainer. His angle during both of Jackson's appearances seems to me to have been explaining the concept of "beer enthusiast" as "lucky drunk who tips 'em back professionally". The inebriating properties of beer are the properties that most of America knows about or cares about. It's easier to make inferences about being drunk than to attempt a serious discussion of craft brewing in five minutes on late-night TV.
I think Jackson knew all this and didn't fight it this go-round. I even think that the open fly was part of his "schtick". I could be wrong, but dude didn't even slur his speech....
After watching the video again I'm going to declare it "too close to call." I'll admit it's hard to see his face clearly in the little web clip of the segment, and that makes it tougher to gauge drunkeness, but he just seemed "wobbly" and generally slow to respond. The lack of balance could simply mean he's got bad knees or whatever, but it gave me the impression of inebriation.
I'll also concede that Conan is a master of leading the conversation and mildly embarassing guests when he can, but I can't picture Mr. Jackson coming on stage with his fly down on purpose. Then again, he could have been flexing his acting muscles in preparation for a movie role, so we may never know...
Let's just say that if a "normal" person (i.e. not a famous beer drinker), had come wobbling into the store to buy beer with his fly open, I'd think long and hard before selling more alcohol to him.
I too was kind of curious about Jackson's appearance, but I was watching a clip of it at 7am. If he wasn't well on his way, he was at least on parkinsons meds.
Boy did Lovitz look cranky.
Micheal Jackson: Anytown, Any Country... He's wobbly, scruffy, irresponsible, late, pissed as hell. A person who can make a fortune by just drinking beer and being unkempt and still attracting young, impressionable beer babes. Remember his appearance at Rogue last year? A gaggle of groupies!!!
He did look terrible on Conan and he was decidedly drunk. Anyone who disputes this has never sat through a server permit class in Oregon!
But I'm sure Mr Jackson feels things could certainly be worse for him. He's having fun.
Spent time with Michael in Seattle and would have to say there's some evidence of some neurological disorder there. He's not drunk.
I'd have to say that there is definately some sort of neurogical disorder that Mr. Jackson is struggling with. Whether or not he has come out publicly about that, I am not sure. I am also not a doctor but the way he was holding himself - the constant movement and his troubles with reaching the bottles were definate indicators of something other than being drunk.
It was really hard to watch and I felt really bad for him because I don't think the luvitz or conan caught on - either that or they were trying to not bring attention to it. I think the interview could have been handled a little better. Sure, anytime a specialist comes on any late night show, the host makes funny comments and the specialist barely gets a word in edge wise but it seemed that this episode - especially because of luvitz and conan's raport with each other - that Mr. Jackson didn't stand a chance.
Call me an softy if you want but I think he should have been treated with a little more respect - calling him out on his fly in such an untactfull way was especially rude. I guess Conan was trying to help him save face but it didn't come accross that way at all.
But what do you expect from a late night television show? I love Conan to death, he is hilarious but I'm upset about Mr. Jackson's treatment on that show.
Hmm... Perhaps people here need to revisit their comments. Too bad MJ didn't get to publish his book about living with Parkinsons's that he tenatively titled "I'm Not Drunk". It's all too easy to jump to conclusions, now isn't it everyone?
Anonymous - Please get off your high horse. When this footage aired 16 months ago Mr. Jackson had not publicly acknowledged his struggle with Parkinson's disease.
As you say, it is easy to "jump to conclusions", but watch the video in question, try to put the knowledge of Parkinson's out of your mind, and tell me what conclusion you would have jumped to.
I'm not here to defend anyone's comments (they can chime in themselves if they feel the need), but I'm certain that had any of us known of his situation the entire post and follow-up commentary would have been much, much different.
I'll admit, the comments seem harsh in light of what we now know, but hindsight is always 20/20 isn't it?
Lastly, if you're going to be bold enough to chastise others you could at least have the courage to sign your name to the post. Otherwise, please go troll elsewhere.
How do you jerks who thought he was drunk on Conan feel now that has passed away of Parkinson's. Never be quick to judgement, lest ye look like an asshole.
